After a month the bed was delivered and installed by their drivers. The
drivers left and I entered the room to put sheets on the bed only to be driven
out by the fumes issuing from the bed.
Thinking it was the mattress I moved it into my other room and sealed the
room. I was shaking, suffering a sore throat, dizziness and severe asthma
attacks and later suffered terrible mood swings and anxiety attacks as well as
headaches and a burning chest.
Contacting Sleep City I was informed this was normal and the sales people
there fully expected their own children to have suffered badly from the
experience as they all have asthma. I was informed the fumes would dissipate
overnight. They did not.
The wooden bed-frame also had to be removed, disassembled and placed in the
garage as it was seeping fumes and made me ill.. Staff at Sleep City again
informed me this was normal as a part of the waxing and staining, they were
aware it made people ill and "What did I expect from a new bed!" I informed
Sleep City that I was disabled and ill and had to sleep on the floor despite
spending a large amount on a bed and what I expected was to get an item I could
use
A huge argument ensued as they feel I chose the bed now I should have
to lie in it. They have refused to collect the bed so I am attempting to stop
payment on the cheque as I feel that noxious effects from the bed are covered
under the warrantee. Or at least under common law on the sales of objects and
the reasonable expectations of buyers. I feel that I cannot be expected to be
aware of this pitfall and that staff who are fully aware of the issue of toxic
fumes were responsible for notifying me of the danger or removing the item when
it became clear it was not suitable
I am contacting their management or waiting on a call as I type (no contact
with their head office apart from a receptionist was ever achieved)
One in five Australians are asthmatic and may be affected by the fumes from
an item such as a new bed. It is likely many more have chemical sensitivity or
may become chemically sensitive after such an exposure. At no time was I warned
that the bed delivered to me would be different from the shop model in that it
is toxic to many people.
I may shortly be looking to media outlets to push for product warnings on
all beds regarding the toxic nature of items post-manufacture. -----------
if every bed they can obtain has the capability of injuring or even being fatal
to their children or they find there may be a link to an incident or illness,
immediate or worse, ongoing chemical sensitivities for the rest of their
lives..
It is now three days since things started rolling, the mattress is still
seeping fumes through my apartment despite being behind closed doors and I am
still ill.
Staff at Sleep City Tuggerah have decided that it is okay to hang up on me
when I try to get them to put a call through to their head office etc and I see
a product warning as entirely sensible when the companies feel there is no
problem with placing toxic items in people's homes without warning and also in
not having a reasonable policy for alleviating the problem when it does
occur

Once again we feel that parts from an email sent by the
victim to the bedding retailer's head office is the appropriate way to press our
concerns
And now I lay me down to
sleep...
In that age-old prayer we recognise
our vulnerability while we sleep and ask god to keep us safe
What if you you discovered your
purchase of a new bed had placed you and your children at risk of serious health
hazards not just while the bed is new but for your entire lives?
Imagine discovering staff were
aware of the risk and being stonewalled by the entire corporation or even
arrested when you demanded your rights.
Toxic products, bad
post-sales service and prejudice?
Page one... service with a
sneer
Page two... product
warning!
